Victor Hugo – From Hope to Heartbreak… to Hurricane!
What a rollercoaster ride it’s been for punters who put their trust in Victor Hugo! Trained by Irfan Ghatala, this horse started the season strong—finishing a close second behind Emphatic, who went on to win again. Expectations soared!

But then came the disaster.
In his next outing, Victor Hugo ran like a complete flop—trailing home over 10 lengths behind Mindful in a 2000m race. That shocker hit punters like a punch to the gut. What went wrong? Many had backed him with confidence based on his earlier performance… only to be brutally let down.
Fast forward to Saturday, in the Karnataka Police Cup (1800m, Class 2)—and what do we see? Victor Hugo came back like a lightning bolt, thrashing his four rivals by a 15-length margin, and the jockey barely moved! Without exaggeration, the winning margin could’ve been 20 lengths if G Vivek hadn’t slowed him down near the finish.
It’s baffling. From a promising racehorse to an absolute dud, and then to a cheetah… all in just 40 days! Move over PC Sorcar—Irfan Ghatala is pulling off real magic tricks at the BTC! If this keeps up, punters won’t need tipsters—they’ll need magicians.
Circus or Competition?
This isn’t a one-off. Far too often in Indian racing, horses that look like they can’t run suddenly turn into rockets overnight. Sadly, many trainers are playing the same game. One day, the horse can’t finish within 15 lengths of the winner. Next outing, it destroys the field. Logic? None.
Thankfully, the authorities seem to have had enough.
Justice Served: Club Cracks the Whip
In a much-needed cleanup move, the Stipes and Stewards handed out serious punishments:
- Trainer GY Rajesh Babu has been disqualified for a year (July 2025 – June 2026) for a shocking 12kg weight variation on Adelanto between acceptance and race day.
- Jockey Rajesh Kumar received a six-month suspension for his weak ride on Lauterbrunnen.
- Trainer Narayan Gowda was slapped with a ₹50,000 fine for his role in the same race.
- Trainer MR Singh and again Narayan Gowda were fined ₹10,000 each for suspicious improvements in their horses Mystic Charm and Glaze.
- Big names like Prasanna Kumar and Pradeep Annaiah were also caught. More suspensions are reportedly on the way!
At last, the men in charge are taking a stand, but it’ll take time to fix a system so badly bent.
When It Rains, It Wins!
A thunderstorm struck the racecourse, forcing the final race to be postponed. It was held as the first race on Sunday instead. But before the heavens opened, punters witnessed a nice surprise!
Reiko from Pradeep Annaiah’s yard won the Yeravada Stud Plate (1400m), paying out handsomely at 5 to 1. Chardikala (trained by Altamash) finished second, just ahead of Forest Fragrance. But the shocker? The hot favourite Aquastic failed to even place! Talk about a bad day for the fancy backers.
Favourites Continue to Flop
Trainer MR Singh’s run of poor luck continued. She’s So Beautiful, heavily backed in the Bold Gesture Plate, never looked like a contender. What a letdown!
On the flip side, 10 to 1 longshot Golden Glory from Satish Narredu’s stable led from start to finish in a commanding win.Although Golden Glory was Raced in Grade 1 company and Grade 2 company earlier to do the forward attempt The penultimate run in Class 4 was also pathetic and many thought this horse as harmless to the favourite in a ;no whip’ race/Totally Epic ran second, while Jully impressed with a late run into third. Keep an eye on her.
My Solitaire Breaks the Drought
Finally! After countless attempts, My Solitaire, trained by Shoban Babu, claimed victory in the Amazing Grace Plate (1400m). A sigh of relief for her supporters!
She beat the ever-consistent Flamingo Dream, who now has four runner-up finishes in a row. The heavily backed Embosom was perfectly placed turning for home, but simply had no answer when it mattered most. Another favourite bites the dust.
Star of the Day: Scent Of Rain
The main event, the Dr. KM Srinivasa Gowda Memorial Cup, was comfortably won by the well-backed Scent Of Rain from Sulaiman Attaollahi’s yard. She hit the front as the gates opened and never looked back, giving Trevor Patel an armchair ride.
Vibrant Queen followed her home, while Husanara (trained by Satish Narredu) returned after a long lay-off and ran like she needed the outing.
