“The 2025 Bangalore Summer Racing Season begins May 17 with top horses, trainers, and exciting races. Discover highlights, updates, and more.”

The much-anticipated Bangalore Summer Racing Season is all set to begin on Saturday, May 17, 2025, at the Bangalore Turf Club (BTC). While the opening day features a small six-race card, there’s plenty of optimism as the season unfolds, especially with over 800 horses—including 200 outstation entries—ready to compete.
A Modest Start, But More to Come
The initial race card might seem underwhelming for such a high-profile event, but senior trainers assure that more competitive action is expected in the coming weeks. The BTC management has also encouraged trainers to enter more horses to boost participation and excitement.
Highlight Races
- Opening Day Feature: BTC Charitable Trust Trophy with eight runners.
- Day 2 Highlight: War Hammer Million, a seven-furlong race for 11 promising young horses, including contenders from Mumbai.
Preparations and Updates
BTC Chairman Manjunath Ramesh confirmed that the race track is in excellent shape and feedback from professionals has been positive. The season was launched on time, despite a few hurdles. One such issue was a proposed 15% increase in bookmaker stall fees, which was later settled at 8% after discussions.
All 27 bookmakers from the winter season have signed up again, ensuring full betting operations from day one.
Racing Calendar and Experimentation
Some races were cancelled due to horse withdrawals for veterinary reasons, but the number of races is expected to increase starting next week. BTC Steward Mahesh Medappa also shared that four races will be run over new experimental distances (1300–1500 metres) to test trainer response before any long-term changes are made.
Strike Resolved
A brief strike by the syces (horse caretakers) caused concern on Thursday morning when they refused to work, demanding delayed payments like leave pay, bonuses, and uniform allowances. The club management resolved the issue by promising payments in two parts—by the end of this month and early next month. The syces returned to duty the same evening.
New Appeal Board
The BTC Board of Appeal has been reconstituted with former chairman Shivkumar Kheny at the helm. Other members include senior government officers and racing officials.
Exciting Line-up of Horses
With outstation horses arriving from Kolkata and Chennai, the level of competition is set to rise. The Chennai racing circuit faces an uncertain future, which has brought more horses to Bangalore for better racing opportunities.
Among the early season stars:
- Big Bay, trained by Malesh Narredu, already has two major wins and is one to watch.
- Fynbos, trained by Pesi Shroff, has impressed with a strong mile-long victory.
Other top trainers like Prasanna Kumar and Sulaiman Attaollahi are also expected to field strong contenders throughout the season.
Final Thoughts
As the summer season kicks off, fans, punters, and racing professionals are all hoping for a fair, competitive, and controversy-free experience. With top talent on display and strong support from the racing community, the 2025 Bangalore Summer Racing Season looks set to deliver some thrilling moments.
