Thalassa Triumphs in Gamble for Love Trophy

The first racing day at Pune in 2025 unfolded with an exhilarating mix of surprises and setbacks. The highlight came in the Gamble for Love Trophy, where Thalassa, the lowest-rated filly in a field of ten, stunned everyone with a powerful performance. Despite being written off by most due to her previous record, Thalassa surged ahead in the final stages to capture her third career win — and this time, it was at the highest class.
The race began with Irish Gold hitting the front, closely followed by Christophany. Market King and It’s My Time raced in striking positions while the favourite Snowfall settled mid-pack. Apprentice Aditya Waydande aboard Thalassa had a clean jump but dropped back early. However, as the runners approached the final bend, Thalassa began to make her move.
Neeraj Rawal drove Christophany into the lead at the top of the straight, but Thalassa came charging from the outside. In a heart-pounding stretch battle, she clawed her way past Christophany in the final strides to win by a neck. Market King held on to third while It’s My Time and Pride’s Prince were inseparable for fourth.
Fourth Wing’s Win Voided in Rare False Start Decision
The final race of the day ended in unexpected drama. Favourite Fourth Wing crossed the line first after a thrilling finish over Midnight Express. However, the starter reported a technical malfunction in the starting gate mechanism — the gates failed to open immediately when the button was pressed. Some horses dashed forward prematurely, leading to chaos.
Despite the starter sounding the siren, the jockeys continued to race. Following a formal enquiry, the stewards declared the race null and void, crushing what would have been a satisfying win for Fourth Wing’s backers.
Darcy Impresses on Debut for Trainer Faisal Abbas
Trainer Faisal Abbas enjoyed a fantastic day, saddling a quick double. After Thalassa’s heroics, debutant Darcy shone brightly in the DK Ashish Salver. Initially, Dancing Cloud set the pace, but it was Darcy who impressed the most with her electric turn of foot.
Ridden by A. Sandesh, Darcy chased down Delstar with purpose and left favourite Merlet struggling to respond. Once in the clear, Darcy (Sanus Per Aquam – St Pauli’s Girl) sprinted away for an impressive first win. Merlet could only settle for second, while Between Lands and Conjurer followed.
Wind Dancer Leaves Favourite Challenge Accepted Behind
The third race saw the heavily fancied Challenge Accepted face disappointment. Wind Dancer, trained by Dallas Todywalla and guided by young rider Navnath Bhosale, darted to the lead and never looked back. Despite being drawn on the rail, she grabbed the initiative early and maintained her edge in the straight.
Challenge Accepted gave chase but couldn’t match Wind Dancer’s pace and acceleration. Wind Dancer (Western Aristocrat – Watchmyscript) scored her maiden win with ease, two lengths clear of the favourite. Pure finished a close third, while Endurance followed well behind.
Fable Cruises to Victory with Sandesh on Board
Sandesh earlier rode another flawless race atop Fable, who delivered a smooth and commanding victory for trainer Adhirajsingh Jodha. Golden Heart and Moonlight Kiss dictated the early pace while Sandesh patiently waited to strike.
Once they entered the final straight, Fable (Dreamfield – Legendofthephoenix) accelerated smoothly and galloped away to win effortlessly. Beyond Stars, Moonlight Kiss, and Golden Heart filled the minor slots without ever threatening the winner.
Lord Eric Delivers in Season Opener
Dallas Todywalla’s Lord Eric began the Pune season with a dominant performance in the opening race. Ridden confidently by Trevor Patel, Lord Eric sat right behind early leader Menjou’s Moustache before asserting his authority in the home stretch.
Lord Eric (Roderic O’Connor – Isn’t She Lovely) cruised to a comfortable win, while Lightning McQueen closed late but had too much ground to cover. Menjou’s Moustache did enough to retain third by a whisker, just ahead of Moment of Madness.
Bee Magical Swoops Down Late
Bee Magical, trained by S. Waheed, gave her supporters reason to cheer in the Season Opener Plate (Division I). Though she had to work hard, Neeraj Rawal timed his ride perfectly. Diligence led into the straight, but Bee Magical loomed large in the final furlong and surged past.
Zephyr also finished strongly but could only secure second in a close contest, while Mojo and Diligence completed the top four.
She’s A Teaser Dazzles with Front-Running Win
Another exciting performance came from She’s A Teaser in the upper division of the Elegance Plate. Trained by S. Waheed and ridden by Bhawani Singh, the mare grabbed the lead early and showed great resolve under pressure.
Despite Zip Along’s persistent challenge, She’s A Teaser (Planetaire – Aahaygran) responded gamely to win her maiden race. Continental Drift and Ma Cherie followed them home.
Bohemian Rhapsody Grants Waydande His First Win of the Season
Bohemian Rhapsody handed young apprentice Aditya Waydande his first win of the season with a polished display in a modest maiden field. The Hosidar Daji-trained filly tracked Talking Point and Purple Martini early in the race.
As the leaders began to tire, Bohemian Rhapsody (Tenth Star – Outrageous) found her rhythm and surged ahead in the final furlong to win convincingly. Purple Martini held second while Talking Point faded to third. Leo The Lion rounded off the judge’s frame.
Summary
The Pune racing season began with high drama, emotion, and memorable finishes. From the surprise victory of Thalassa in the Gamble for Love Trophy to a dramatic nullification of the final race, it was a day that offered both joy and frustration. Several public favourites won, but it was a bittersweet day that kept everyone on edge till the very end.
